Lent
begins Wednesday, February 22 this year. During this time of
preparation for Easter we will be looking at Jesus’ last day on
earth. To facilitate this we will be using "24 Hours That
Changed the World" written by Adam Hamilton, pastor of The
United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS.
This study considers: `The Last
Supper', `The Garden of Gethsemane', `Condemned by
Righteousness,' `Jesus, Barabbas and Pilate', `The Torture and
Humiliation of the King `, ‘The Crucifixion' and `Christ the
Victor.'
During this time you are
encouraged to read a short daily devotional from "24 Hours That
Changed the World: 40 Days of Reflections." These is a book of
short devotions which will be provided to every household in the
congregation. You will be asked to start those readings on
Monday, February 20. There are six readings per week. So on the
day we worship together there is no reading. During Holy Week
the readings will finish on Wednesday, just before Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Starting each Monday there will be
small groups that will study this book. These sessions will
include a video that was filmed in the Holy Land. The Thursday
Bible studies (10:30 and 7:00) will leave their current study
and use the "24 Hours That Changed the World" study. (They will
continue their current study after Easter.) I hope we can offer
at least one group during the Sunday school hour to focus on
this study. Other groups are possible.
Our Wednesday evening Lenten meal
\ study will also use some of this material. (This should not be
activities that are used during the other group meetings.) Watch
for more information on the menu for this evening. We eat at
6:00 and finish in time for choir at 7:00.
I hope you are in worship every
Sunday but especially during this Lent. Each week will `stand
alone' but the more you can participate the more you will grow
in Christ. What will our focus be until then? Be sure to be in
worship!

Lee Teschendorf announced the Chaplains Corps started on January
15th. Chaplains Jeremy Beieler,Timothy Decker,Trina Holmberg,
Dennis Kucharczyk, Jackie Roe, Lang Yang, and William Sanders
were sworn in by the County Clerk that day. They will assist any
Law Enforcement Agency in Tuscola County. They are on call and
will come out to scenes to help in any way they can. Many
denominations are represented here.

Quilting and Bazaar Notes
So what does our Quilting group have to
do with the Bazaar? Well, as you might expect, some of their
projects will be available for sale at our fall bazaar. They
meet Wednesday, February 15 at 9:00am to work on their own
quilting projects. Anyone wanting to join them and pick up some
hints and tips is welcome. Bring your own machine and project.
Contact Connie or Yvonne because they usually bring in a pot of
soup - just want to make sure there is enough for everyone!
But, the following Wednesday, February
22, you are invited to come in anytime starting at 9:00am to
join the ladies in a project for the bazaar or you may bring in
your own bazaar project to work on. You may come and go as your
schedule permits.
The group plans to meet each month but
the day may change so if you are interested, let one of them
know so they can keep you up-to-date on the next scheduled
times.
The stores
want to move Christmas leftovers and this would be great for the
Straw Draw items: Tool
kits, fishing lures, wallets and etc for men. Gift items for
teens. Candles and potpourri for the home. Keep your eyes open!!

are needed. Small items
like knickknacks, soaps, cups, cooking items, lotions, cute

for Shirley Wisenbach to get them ready for the bazaar! She is
making pull over tops instead of tops with buttons so look for
stretchy ribbed knit material to be used for cuffs and turtle
necks.

-Reviewed maintenance contract with Honeywell. Will interview
local contractors for quotes.
-Learned the office copier needs to be replaced. Will get bids.
-Rod Sherman volunteered to put hangers/hooks up in big shed.
-Acknowledged the shelving in the mechanical room completed by
Bob Wood.
-A mason has filled the crack in the east wall under the stained
glass window. Cost: $75.00.
-Bell Tower water seepage discussion: Gary learned from the
builder that no one was doing sealing of bricks at that time.
The
Board accepted the proposal from Melanie and Ryan Radabaugh to
provide refuse disposal at no cost to the church. Several large,
wheeled totes will be available for the garbage. When a tote is
full, it can be wheeled out where the dumpster used to be so
their truck can get to it. The totes should be found between the
church and the little shed just outside the kitchen entrance
which should help keep the strong winds from blowing them
around. Trash will be picked up every Thursday. We are very
grateful for this generous gift by Diva Disposal.

-Education: Attendance average up by
two this past year. All classes are doing well including S.S. "Lite"
which is now meeting in the Cry Room. Lori Inbody is planning a
Kidz Day in February.
-Mission: Have discussed how to become a Spotlight Church. (See
article.)
-Nominations: Approved adding Chris Allen to Ad. Council as
recording secretary, Doris Jones to Finance, Caren Clara to
Altar Guild and Betsy Dillon from Outreach to Fellowship
Committee.
-Pastor: A Vision Committee will be set up. Lenten Services are
being set up. Planning Confirmation class soon. Sound issues are
being looked into.
-Finances: Treasurer’s report - positive report. Bills all paid
including 100% apportionments for 2011.
Next Council Meeting will be March 26 at 7pm.

-Confirmed our participation in the Service
of Ashes held at St. Pancratius.

-Discussed ordering Easter flowers. Consensus: if folks would
like to bring their own plants to share for Easter morning they
are welcome to do so.
-Our Choir Director questioned time to do an Easter Cantata -
decided to do select songs from various cantatas that will
correspond with the topic from the Lenten study for each Sunday.

Threads across the Thumb IV
This is a month long
event for the Rawson Memorial Library for all those interested
in quilting.
Quilts will be on display in the Library all
month. You are invited to take the time to come in and browse.

Quilter’s Tea will be

be a program by Virginia Anderson on 19th, 20th,

Grandma’s Apron
(This
has been around the Internet and more but it struck a
sentimental cord with Shirley Wisenbach when she read this
article. Hope you enjoy it too.)
I remember aprons; do you? I don’t think our
kids know what an apron is anymore. The principal use of
Grandma’s apron was to protect her dress, but the apron did so
much more. It served as a pot holder for removing hot pans from
the over, and to wipe her brow when the weather was almost as
hot as the old wood stove. When the weather was cold, Grandma
wrapped the apron around her arms. It was wonderful for drying
children’s tears and, on occasion, was even used for cleaning
out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for
carrying eggs, fussy chicks and sometimes half-hatched eggs to
be finished in the warming oven. Wood chips and kindling were
brought into the kitchen in an apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of
vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the
hulls. In the fall, it was used to bring in apples that had
fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it
was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a
matter of seconds. And aprons were ideal hiding places for shy
kids. When dinner was ready, Grandma waved her apron from the
porch, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields
to eat. It will be a long time before someone invents something
as useful and versatile as the old-fashioned apron.

Our Community Lunch program has now become our
Soup Ministry at Revive CC. It was a hard decision to make but
it was felt that it would be a better way to serve the needy in
the area.
Revive has a food pantry on the third Saturday of each
month from 10:00am - 11:00am. It follows the Eastern Michigan
Food Bank’s income guidelines.
Soup is
prepared and packaged here on the day our quilters are working.
On the
third Saturday, one or two people can take the soup to the
Revive building on Main Street where the food pantry is held. It
is about 90 minutes on the third Saturday. It is very
easy and also humbling. Helpers are welcome and encouraged.
Donations of money and soup making supplies are always welcome.

One Great Hour of Sharing
This offering is taken on the fourth Sunday in
Lent (March 18 this year). These funds provide major support of
the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which aids in
ongoing ministries of food, shelter, health and peace as well as
assisting in the wake of disasters. Generous giving allowed
UMCOR in 2008 alone to assist survivors of Hurricanes Gustave
and Ike and massive wildfires in California, to help provide
safe drinking water in Nicaragua, to teach trades to HIV/AIDS
orphaned students and much more. A young Hurricane Katrina
survivor recalled, “I thought we were going to die.” But of the
ministry provided by the generous giving of United Methodists
that has sustained her and her family, she commented, “I like
what they do about God.”

Noisy Offering
As we prepared to gather our January "noisy
offering" you heard from Missions Chair, Barb Kirn about our
goal of becoming a Spotlight Church for 2012. While missions
have always been a part of CCUMC this will help us focus on
missions while broadening our mission. The "Spotlight Church
2012-13"* book reads,
"Spotlight churches have a broad mission program of educating
their congregation of missions locally, conference- wide,
nationally and globally. The needs reach around the world."
To qualify as a `Spotlight Church' we have to
give in 7 specific areas. The missions committee has established
a plan through which we think we can accomplish this. The first
thing we must do -pay our
apportionments in full. We are planning on doing that -
with your faithful giving.
One of the other things we must do is pledge
and support Detroit Conference
Ministry Jubilee Projects. These include a variety of
ministries right here in our Detroit Annual Conference (the
whole U.P. and the eastern half of the L.P.) Our mission
committee has chosen
Top-of-The-Thumb
Leisure
Ministries
(TTLM) for this project. The following is from the "Spotlight
Church 2012-1" book about TTLM. "Two, United Methodist pastors
started (TTLM) as an ecumenical ministry seeking to ‘strengthen
the Christian Community among residents and visitors to the
thumb area’ by providing programming in tourist communities,
regular meetings for worship and fellowship, and training for
Christian leaders in ministries." Rev. Bob Garrett was one of
those two UM founders and Laura Hill and Bryan Hill were summer
employees. “The TTLM seasonal staff offers program and conduct
ministries for families and children at local shoreline camping
facilities under the supervision of an ecumenical Board of
Directors with a United Methodist majority. Weekly vesper
music\worship services are arranged during the summer at local
churches by the Board. Over the years since it began in the
sixties, many present Detroit Conference pastors and family
member have experienced growth in their ministry skills and
Christian leadership while serving in the TTLM program"
You can find out more about this ministry,
located very near us, by `liking' them on Face- book. Hopefully
next summer we can take at least one carload to one of their
events.
Pastor Jackie was on the summer staff while she was in
college. She believes it was a great learning experience where
she got to serve God - and get paid to `hang out' at Caseville
Beach!
Our January "Noisy Offering” will be sent in support of this
ministry.
Our February "Noisy Offering" will be sent to
support "Revive Cass City Ministries.” REVIVECC is an
independent ministry, started from a grassroots effort of the
members of the Cass City Missionary Church. Revive is for all
denominations and promotes new life in Christ Jesus and
encourages and strengthens those who already believe. ReviveCC
has evolved into a outreach ministry to the needy in the Cass
City School District through a food pantry and a goods &
clothing resale store. There are monthly food distributions for
local families in need and an annual Saturday Fun Fair for kids
in the spring.
The third Sunday Noisy Offering in March will be for “In
His Name”. This fund through the Cass City Ministerial
Association helps locals with gas and food.
All of these are ways we “make disciples of
Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world" as our
denomination's mission statement encourages us to do.

your camp registrations filled out and sent in to be sure there
is a spot for you! Send in 1/3 of the registration fee. When you
get your confirmation slip back, take it to Janelle Dickinson so
the remaining 2/3rd’s will be paid by our Camp Fund.

Looking for Graduates!

If
you have a high school graduate for 2012, please contact the
church office so we don’t over look someone! Also, we want to
recognize our college folks who have graduated anytime this past
year - even if they are going on for more education.
Shamrock
St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach people about the
Godhead. Holding up a shamrock, he challenged them, “Is this one
leaf, or three?” Inevitably, people replied that it was both,
prompting St. Patrick to draw the analogy that so, too, is God:
one God in three Persons — the Holy Trinity.

We

BIRTHS
We
celebrate the birth of: Evelyn Grace Damm born on January 2 to
Jason and Elizabeth Damm of Indiana. Evelyn weighed 8 pounds 1
ounce and was 21 ½ inches long. Excited first-time grandparents
are Randy and Carmen Damm. Great-grandparents are Dale and Mary
Damm.
We
celebrate the birth of Alexander Quintin Edward Karr born
January 26 to Tim and Lorena Karr of Washington. Alexander
weighed 8 pounds and 9.9 ounces and is 19 3/4 inches long.
Shirley and Jay Wisenbach are the great-grandparents.
