anniversary
Dear Members and Friends of Cass City United
Methodist Church:
It's been a little over ten years since the congregation of CCUMC moved
from its old buildings to its present location north of Cass City on
Cemetery Road. Our Administrative Council has decided to make Sunday,
April 19, 2009 the date we will celebrate our tenth anniversary with a
special worship service at 11 a.m., follo wed
by a potluck dinner at noon (or shortly thereafter). Please bring your
own table service and a dish to share.
It is our hope that past UM pastors and District Superintendents who
have served in Cass City will be on hand that day to help us celebrate
and remember. We also want to invite former members and others who have
moved away over the years to come back to see us that day. Please extend
an invitation to those out of the area. Let's make this an interesting
day as we praise God for our blessings!
If you have pictures or special messages you would like to share with us
for that special day, please send them to the church over the next few
weeks so we can put them together into a video presentation that we'll
make available for all to see (and take home).
Please mark this date on your calendar!
God's blessings to you!
Sincerely,
Rev. Paul G. Donelson

It Seems a Little Bit Like "Groundhog's Day"
Maybe you saw the movie, "Groundhog's Day," with Bill Murray playing the
part of a tv weatherman reluctantly sent from Pittsburg to Punxsutawney,
PA to cover a story about a weather forecasting "rat" (as he calls it).
This is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his
frustration. On awaking the `following' day, he discovers that it's
Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First he uses this to his
advantage. Then comes the realization that he is doomed to spend the
rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people doing the
same thing EVERY day.
Have you ever wondered if life wasn't actually like that? But, instead
of days, it's years that repeat themselves, over and over?
It seems like just yesterday that we celebrated New Years Day. Then,
even as I'm writing this article (in mid February) Valentine's Day is
looking me in the face. Then comes Ash Wednesday, followed by Lent and
then Good Friday, then Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day,
Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Around and around it
goes, as fast as the earth can orbit the sun in twelve months!
As I sit here in my study at the church, looking at the calendar, full
of birthdays, anniversaries, and events, I think to myself, "Didn't we
just do this?"
How about this idea, instead: What would it be like if we followed a ten
year cycle, instead of just a yearly cycle? What if we spread out those
celebrations to cover a ten year period? We would actually have more
time to add other special events into those ten years that we scarcely
have time to think about as we celebrate things with the system we have
today.
We would certainly have a lot more time to concentrate on some of the
little things that otherwise seem to go unnoticed - things we may not
even think about, but things that really deserve to be thought about.
For instance, instead of celebrating Lent over a period of forty days
(minus the Sundays), like we do now, what if we spent 400 days (57
weeks), instead? Certainly, that would give the Church much more time to
study every little aspect of what that particular season should mean for
a Christian. In fact, those four hundred days would give us time to
study every verse in the Bible that talk about Lent. Because Lent
focuses on preparation to be followers of Christ, we would certainly
become experts in discipleship after four hundred days of intense study!
And we probably wouldn't need a refresher course in the subject for at
least ten years!
Of course, there are those who don't think there really is enough about
Lent that could cover a period of four hundred days. But, of course,
they're wrong. In fact, here is my short list of scriptures and subjects
that could be covered during my proposed 57 weeks of Lent:
1. Mark 11:1-10 Jesus enters Jerusalem
2. Mark 11:11-26 cursed figs & temple

There really are only six weeks!
But, imagine how old you'd be if you only had to celebrate your birthday
once every ten years! How many candles would you have on your cake?

-First Day of Spring (20th) [we might all want to celebrate the day this
year!!];
-and even Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (26th)!

Back when a key similar to this was used to lock doors, people knew when
they found a locked door, it meant that they should not enter. Most
folks abided by this "unwritten" request even knowing another person
with a skeleton key could enter quite easily.
Times have changed and I think, they will change a great deal more in
the coming years. It was a sad day when churches needed to start locking
their doors. We are called to be good stewards of God's property and we
also need to be willing to share it, but we are also responsible to see
it is well-kept for all to use.
Our Lock-Up Team will be continuing to serve the church. This however
doesn't give any of us license to walk out of the building without
turning off/or down heat and lights. For many years, we have not had a
building custodian who opened and closed the church each day. Even
though it is the responsibility of the chairperson or leader or usher to
make sure the building is secure when he or she leaves, the lock up team
is a second line of defense. It really doesn't take much time - it just
takes the effort to quickly check for running water in the restrooms,
check the cooler and freezer temperatures, check the thermostats and
lights before securing the doors.
We are looking for more folks to share in the Lock-Up Team's duties. The
names are rotated by the week and the more folks who take a turn gives
you less times your turn comes up. If you would like to take a week, now
and then, please contact the church office.

A Letter From Rev. Peggy Paige
This is a letter of congratulations and appreciation to you and your
congregation for your faithfulness in paying your 2008 Detroit Annual
Conference and district appor- tionments, even when you weren't able to
make the goal of 100%. I want to express to you my gratefulness for the
commitment to Christ and the Mission of the church you have demonstrated
through your stewardship.
You have made possible the continuance of a very strong district and
worldwide ministry through our denomination. I know what efforts are
required to help people see the importance of giving together through
apportionments. Thank you for your work.
Leaders of our annual conference and of our general church seek to keep
financial requests from increasing while advancing our mission and
ministries. The Ministry Jubilee Program in our conference is our way to
provide for greater participation in our ministries. Our common goal is
to make disciples and strengthen congregations. It is crucial that your
apportioned amounts are remitted at 100% and then continue to make a
Ministry Jubilee pledge. In 2008 The DAC had the lowest percentage
receipt of common budget apportionments in over a decade at 71.75% of
the common budget. Port Huron's common budget apportionments were paid
at 79.3%. Congratulations!
The Port Huron District also supported Second Mile Giving, with the top
three projects being: 1. One Great Hour of Sharing, 2. Haiti Hot Lunch,
3. CW - Blankets. In addition you supported Port Huron's covenant
brothers and sisters in Liberia in 2008. Total Second Mile Giving
totaled $107,612.46. Congratulations to each church and individual for
making these exciting things happen.
In 2008 your church paid 53.10% of your apportionments compared to
90.00% in 2007. I am very concerned when there is a drop in payment of
apportionments. I would expect that you and the members of your
congregation share this concern with me. When churches are unable to pay
their fair share this places an added financial burden on other churches
in the DAC. In light of this, I am asking that you continue working with
your Administrative Council and your Finance Committee to develop a
stewardship plan that will provide enough resources to fund your local
ministry as well as that of the Annual Conference and beyond. Please
send me a copy of that plan.
Again, special thanks to you and the members of your congregation for
your continuing support. Please pass this appreciation and gratitude
along to the members of your congregation. I know it took everyone
working together to accomplish this task. May God bless you as you
continue to serve Christ and the church.
Administrative Council 1-27-09
New Members to the Council were introduced and greeted. New Chairperson
of the Ad. Council is Jane Mitchell.
Treasurer's Report: Bills are paid to date. Nothing has been paid on
apportionments yet.

Trustees updated list of improvements: new lawn mower, windows/carpeting
and other repairs done at parsonage and the dead tree in yard has been
removed. Trustees would like to see the lock-up team continue.
Linda Derfiny and Dolly Misch reported they have found a home for the
ladies' closet in the building with Revive Ministries.
Will celebrate our ten-year anniversary on Sunday, April 19, with a

ideas for decorating next year.

here at noon on Saturdays for those in the community needing a warm
meal. Starting date unknown at this time.

and the Prom is the weekend before. Known high school graduates are:

It was reported that Gerald Auten took pictures every day of our
building process and Bob Wood has made a display board for the pictures.
